Chap. IV, 14. The driving force of the Counter-Revolution

blank

If the most powerful driving force of the Revolution is the dynamism of human passions, provoked by a metaphysical hate against God, against the Truth and against Good, there exists a symmetrical Counter-Revolutionary trend that aims at controlling passions by subordinating them to will and reason. The driving force of the Counter-Revolution is to be found in the spiritual strength coming to man from the fact that God governs his reason, the reason dominates will and the latter finally dominates sensibility. He is the servant of God but, exactly for this reason, he is master of himself.
Such a spiritual strength cannot be conceived without considering supernatural life, that raises man above the miseries of fallen nature. In this spiritual strength, for Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira, lies the most profound dynamism of the Counter-Revolution.
“It may be asked what value can be attributed to this dynamism. We reply that, in theory, it is incalculable, and it is certainly superior to that of the Revolution: ‘Omnia possum in eo qui me confortat’ (Phil. 4:13).
“When men resolve to co-operate with the grace of God, the marvels of history are worked: the conversion of the Roman Empire; the formation of the Middle Ages; the reconquest of Spain, starting from Covadonga; all the events that result from the great resurrections of soul of which peoples are also capable. These resurrections are invincible, because nothing can defeat a people that is virtuous and truly loves God.”118
